The first rebellion against the British rule during Pre-independence period broke out in Ambala (Haryana), few hours before the 10th May Meerut Revolt. The very thought of the First War of Independence 1857 or ‘Sepoy Mutiny’ reminds us of Mangal Pandey, Rani Laxmibai, Tatya Tope, Nana Saheb, or the last Mughal, Bahadur Shah Zafar, to name a few. But alongside these heroes, there were several others who scarified their lives and went into history as the unsung heroes of Indian Freedom Struggle. The people of Haryana rose against the British authorities.

The cartridges introduced by the colonial regime triggered a revolt at Ambala Cantt where the mutineers targeted the bungalows, stores and lodges of the British officers. Although the situation got out of hand and the revolt was suppressed and mutineers were hanged to death. The objective of constructing a War Memorial at Ambala is to bring forth the bravery of those ‘unsung heroes’ in front of the people. This will instill feelings of patriotism and nationalism in our youth. This project is a matter of pride and mark of honour to the splendid sacrifice laid down by the sepoys of the 60thNative Infantry, Ambala.
