Satyacharan Giri was born in 1905 in a poor family in Khajurnan village under Bagnan police station in Howrah district. His father, Rakhal Chandra Giri, was a poor farmer, which prevented Satyacharan from acquiring formal education. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, he joined the Indian freedom movement.
During the Civil Disobedience Movement of 1930, called by Mahatma Gandhi, Satyacharan actively participated under the leadership of Chandidas Ghosh from Sahara village in Mugkalyan. He was arrested at Nuntia Hut for violating Section 144 and was imprisoned for six months. In the second phase of the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1932, he was again arrested for picketing in front of liquor and marijuana shops and was sentenced to seven months in prison.
After his release, Satyacharan continued his activism, engaging with the Harijan Movement, the Drug Ban Movement. While in jail, he met renowned freedom fighter Bibhutibhushan Ghosh from Bagnan police station. He also played an active role in the Quit India Movement of 1942.
Following India's independence, Satyacharan dedicated himself to social service. His life remains a testament to the enduring spirit of those who contributed to India's freedom struggle and its transition into a modern nation.
