Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Jagannath Mishra was born in 1906 in Nadibandha village of Ganjam district. In 1925, while assisting Gopabandhu Das in the distribution of relief to the flood victims he was inspired by him. In 1927, he joined Congress on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to Berhampur and participated in Congress’ constructive programs. In 1930, he joined the group of Congress workers in the Civil Disobedience Movement by illegally manufacturing salt in Inchudi where he was arrested and sentenced to three months of rigorous imprisonment. In 1932, he became the secretary of the Ganjam District Congress committee and was arrested again for renewing the Civil Disobedience Movement. He was sentenced to six months of rigorous imprisonment and was fined Rs 200. After his release from jail, he became president of the Ganjam District committee of congress and became an important member of the party in the state. In 1939, he was arrested again for speaking against the government in a public meeting in Puri and was sentenced to three months imprisonment. In 1940, he was elected as a member of the District Board and joined the Forward Block formed by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Gradually he remained aloof from active politics and devoted his life to many constructive works.
