Prem Singh

Amritsar, Punjab

August 08, 2022 to August 08, 2023

Prem Singh belonged to Sur Singh village of Amritsar district. His father, Jiwan Singh was a modest peasant. He took part in the revolutionary activities of the Ghadar Party in Punjab's Majha area. He met with Daffedar Lachhman Singh, Natha Singh, and Bogh Singh of the Jhar Sahib Gurdwara. Jhar Sahib Gurdwara became a secret meeting place for Ghadar Party members under his influence. Lal Singh Bhure, Nidhan Singh, Gujjar Singh, and other Ghadar Party members frequented the Gurdwara. He contacted the soldiers of the 23rd Cavalry and prepared them for an uprising against British rule. Daftar Lachman Singh gave a sword to Prem Singh as a symbol of their commitment to the Ghadar Party. Soldiers Sucha Singh, Nihal Singh, and some others gathered at Jhar Sahib in November 1914 to take part in the planned rebellion. However, the police raided the gurdwara and arrested several ghadarites. Prem Singh managed to flee. On March 21, 1915, police arrested Lal Singh Bhure, another ghadarite, after receiving a tip from Padri village moneylender Kapoor Singh. Prem Singh made the decision to punish Kapoor Singh. He arrived at Kapoor Singh's village with Hardit Singh and Inder Singh of Padri Kalan. Prem Singh shot at point blank at Kapoor Singh in the early hours of the morning, avenging Lal Singh's arrest. Later on, Prem Singh was arrested and tried under Sections 302 and 398 in the Padri Murder Case. He was sentenced to death. On May 16, 1916, he was hanged in the Lahore Central Jail
