Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

P.M. Ramu Konar was born in 1918 to Muthu Konar in Ramanathapuram of Paramankudi. At a young age, his family migrated to Malaysia. In 1937, he started his business as a bottler and ferrous metal dealer in Penang, Malaysia. In 1942, he joined the Sarvamaa Force formed by Rash Bihari Bose, which was later disbanded. In 1943, he joined the Indian National Army and was trained at Solpuri Camp in the Siamese capital Bangkok. He topped in running, rifle, and training commandant at Mingle Town Camp. Netaji hand-picked him as a lieutenant to go to the Imphal front in India. They passed through Mandalay, Bago, Manipur, Kochima and Chittagong, Mol Khin Soon, Irawati, rivers, mountains, and forests to reach the Imphal front. His properties - 197 acres of land in Sungai Ara, Penang, Malaysia, Lumoodlayan, Kuantan shop, house, about 800 grams of gold jewelry and money - were sacrificed for the liberation of the country. Later, he stayed in India, and from 1960 he worked in Co-operative Societies, participated in Panchayats, did social service, and did some INA-related Work. In 1992, Tamil Nadu Government honored him with the Tyaga Sudar Award. In 1997, he was honored by the West Bengal Government. He passed away on October 14, 2001, at the age of 84.
