Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

K.A. Darmalingam was born on 25 December 1919 to Arumugam, at Kattuputhur in Karuru District. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi since childhood, he participated in the freedom struggle. He took part in the Salt satyagraha at various places in Karur District. He was imprisoned for 25 days in the Musiri sub-jail for Satyagraha. On 12 April 1941, he was sentenced to 7 days in Lalgudi Jail due to Satyagraha and again at Musiri. On October 29, 1941, he was arrested by the Egmore Magistrate and sentenced to 4 months in Bellary Jail due to his satyagraha in the area of Ayiram vilakku. He took part in the Quit India Movement in 1942 and was imprisoned for 1 year at Bellary Alipore Jail. He organized the 31st Trichy Zilla Conference at Clock Tower park in 1943, because of which he was imprisoned in Karur sub-jail for 12 days and imprisoned in Trichy sub-jail for 78 days. He passed away on 10 November 2003.
