Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan or self-reliant India campaign is the vision of new India envisaged by the Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. On 12th May 2020, the PM raised a clarion call to the nation giving a kick start to the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan (self-reliant India campaign) and announced the special economic and comprehensive package of INR 20 lakh crores - equivalent to 10% of India’s GDP – to fight COVID-19 pandemic in India.

The aim is to make the country and its citizens independent and self-reliant in all senses. He further outlined five pillars of Aatmanirbhar Bharat – Economy, Infrastructure, System, Vibrant Demography and Demand.

Finance Minister further announced Government reforms and enablers across seven sectors under Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan. The Government undertook reforms such as Supply Chain Reforms for Agriculture, Rational Tax Systems, Simple & Clear Laws, Capable Human Resource and Strong Financial System towards the realization of Aatmanirbhar goals.

Mentioned below are the areas that shall help India for becoming self-reliant

  • Economy: Quantum jumps, not incremental changes
  • Infrastructure: That represents modern India
  • System: Technology enabled systems
  • Vibrant Demography: The largest democracy and it’s vibrant demography
  • Demand: Full utilization of the power of demand & supply.

How shall one envision a self-reliant India

  • Infrastructure: Celebrating progress and milestones of infrastructure in India and how it is fueling growth and Aatmanirbharta.
  • Digital Access in fueling Aatmanirbharta: Payment applications, food ordering, grocery shopping, tele medicine, tele law etc. – focus on how digital access is enabling self-reliance.  
  • Youth and Entrepreneurship, Startups: programs around cultivating entrepreneurial mindsets, cohort based learning and mentoring opportunities, competitions and pitches etc., innovative startups from India contributing to global growth and progress.
  • Sectoral Reforms and Aatmanirbharta: Unlocking value through sectoral reforms, impact assessments, campaigns for change and reform, ease of doing business etc. 
  • Capable Human Resource: Skill development and training of human resource. New career options and choices.
  • Strong Financial System: Teaching finance to kids through gamification, managing money programs for women, rural target groups and others, technology and cyber security camps and outreach.
  • Vocal4Local: Reduced imports, increased exports, grassroot campaigns that support Vocal4Local, rural projects highlighting local initiatives towards self-reliance.  
  • Collaborate Practices Fueling Aatmanirbharta: Initiatives and programs that break down silos between sectors, industries, institutions to achieve better efficiencies of resources and output.
  • India a Global Manufacturing Hub: Highlighting campaigns, achievements in this context. (Example – Made in India iPhones)
  • India – a Helping Hand: Driven by notions of Vasudeva Kutumbakaam i.e. the world is my family campaigns that highlight India’s role in helping other countries.
