Latika Ghosh

Kolkata, West Bengal

January 19, 2023 to January 19, 2024

Latika Ghosh, a teacher by profession based in Calcutta (Kolkata, West Bengal) was one of the founding members of the Mahila Rashtriya Sangha (MRS), an organization meant for mobilizing women for political activism. She was a close associate of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose whose efforts were pivotal in the establishment of MRS.

Latika Ghosh, an Oxford graduate, had already been involved prominently in the nationalist struggle in Bengal, especially in the Gandhian Satyagraha programs and constructive Swadeshi efforts during the Non-Cooperation Movement. However, in the later period she became involved with more militant organizations involved in the anti-British struggle. In 1928, under the presidency of Prabhavati Bose, the MRS was established, and Latika served as a secretary. Known as ‘Colonel’, Latika Ghosh led the volunteers of MRS dressed in red-bordered green saris in the 1928 Calcutta congress. The march made a lasting impression among the Bengalis as the educated women bravely came forward to fight for the country. Bina Das, the woman revolutionary who shot Governor Jackson was one of the associates of Latika.

Women like Latika Ghosh who gave up comfortable careers and took up arms to fight the colonial powers were an inspiration to many.
