Tanuku Taluk Congress Meeting, October 1920

West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh

February 15, 2023

The announcement of the Non-Cooperation Movement was a major milestone in the history of the Indian freedom struggle. Meetings were called by local Congress committees all over the nation to express support and enthusiasm for the coming struggle. One such crucial meeting was organized by the Taluka Congress of Tanuku in the West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh.

The meeting was held on 30th October 1920, and was attended by a massive audience of over two thousand people. Kotagiri Venkata Krishna Rao presided over the gathering, and prominent leaders of the Congress such as Ayyadevara Kaleswara Rao, Mutnuri Krishna Rao, and Maulana Umra Alisa Sahib were present. Several rousing nationalist speeches were delivered by the leaders present there, who encouraged the people of the region to wholeheartedly provide their backing to the Non-Cooperation Movement. This included the boycott of legislatures, boycott of British goods and institutions, support to khadi and other indigenous manufacturing programs and alternatives to British institutions, and a withdrawal of nominations filed for the upcoming provincial elections in the Madras presidency. The meeting concluded with the passing of a resolution offering full support of the people to the Non-Cooperation Movement and the decisions taken at the Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress earlier that year.
