Kachari tribe man defeated British army

Sambhudhan Phonglo was a religious leader of the Kachari tribe in Assam. Phonglo preached anti-British ideas to his people. The British sent troops under C. A Soppit in January 1882 to capture him. The Soppit led British army, faced defeat. A few days later another regiment under Major Boyd was sent to defeat Phonglo’s army. Brave patriots under the leadership of Phonglo fought fiercely and Boyd was killed in the battle. On 12 February 1883 Phonglo was injured in an encounter with the British. He succumbed to injuries and gained martyrdom
