Capture of Allahabad Fort

Prayagraj (Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh

May 16, 2023 to May 16, 2024

The Great Revolt of 1857 was a significant event in the history of India, with numerous battles and skirmishes fought between the British and the Indian nationalists. One such battle was fought for the capture of the Allahabad Fort, located in the district of Prayagraj.

Nana Sahib, the leader of the rebellion and Emperor of the revolutionary government, used the fort as a stronghold. It was surrounded by mines and gunpowder, posing a great challenge to the British. The nationalists strongly defended the fort since it was strategically crucial for the British. The fort was located a mile away from an entrenchment brimming with guns, and the nationalists intended to fight from there and then retire to the fort when the British army attacked them. Lieutenant-Colonel Neill arrived at the Allahabad Fort during the revolt on 11th June, 1857, but the nationalists had already seized control of the fort. He assumed command the next day and began strategizing for its recapture. The nationalists had destroyed many structures, including the bridge leading to the fort, making it difficult for the British forces to reach the fort. On the subsequent day, the Lieutenant-Colonel dispatched his troops to drive the nationalists out of the nearby villages. After a fierce battle, the British forces finally recaptured the fort and garrisoned it with their soldiers.

The capture of the Allahabad Fort was a critical event in the Great Revolt of 1857, signifying a significant turning point in the conflict. Moreover, this event signifies the valour of nationalists who were committed to challenge the British authority in India.
