Tharammel Krishnan

Tharammel Krishnan was born on 22 June 1907 in Vadakara, Kozhikode. He studied Intermediate at Malabar Christian College and joined Loyola College in Madras for his Graduation. He was arrested in 1942 for his active participation in the Quit India Movement. He was imprisoned for two and half years in Thanjavur Jail and Vellore Jail, where his health deteriorated significantly. Former Indian President R Venkataraman was a fellow prisoner in Vellore jail. When Gandhiji visited Vadakkra, his speech was translated by Tharammel Krishnan. At that time his wife Sunada offered fruits and jewels to Gandhi on a silver plate. Trammel Krishnan was attracted to the ideals of Sree Narayana Guru and served as one of the early leaders of SNDP. He was the co-convener of Kozhikode Chellanoor SN College and the president of Gandhi Peace Foundation. He published a newspaper called “Nava Keralam” from Calicut. He died on 2 October 1997.
