Shyamala Rajagopalan

Shyamala Rajagopalan was born in Kamayut town near Yangon in Burma. She studied at the British Government High School in Kamayut. She would frequently bunk classes and take part in the ‘Seva Dal’ Movement. The Seva Dal was the grassroots front organization of the Indian National Congress. Later she heard Subash Chandra Bose speak at the nearby bazaar. His slogan "Give me blood, I will give you freedom" resonated through the small town. She was moved by the passionate speech. Her father had strongly opposed her induction into the INA, but she was determined. At 16, Shyamala Rajagopalan was the youngest spy for Bose’s all-woman Rani of Jhansi Regiment led by Captain Lakshmisahgal. She was an undercover ‘agent’ stationed at a military hospital in Mingaladon as a staff nurse, gathering intelligence against British agents for the Japanese who helped Bose in his fight for freedom. She got an about a bombing and warned the Japanese army stationed in the area. Following her , the Japanese army quickly removed 72 tanks and 80 guns to safety. Final bombardment’ in the Burma Campaign in 1945 when the allied forces defeated the Japanese. She lifted several people from a trench, climbed up a ladder and got them to safety.
