Kalipada Bera

Purba Medinipur (East Medinipur), West Bengal

May 07, 2024 to May 07, 2026

Kalipada Bera emerged from humble beginnings, born in 1914, in Kismat Jagannathchak village, within the Purba Medinipur district. His father, Indra Narayan Bera, faced hardships providing for the family, which prevented Kalipada from receiving a formal education. Nonetheless, he found inspiration in the valiant acts of freedom fighters like Gobordhon Pramanik and Rajanikanta Pramanik from his district.

During the Salt Satyagraha movement of 1930, Kalipada Bera actively engaged in protests at the Kalai Telipukur Ground, standing alongside fellow activists such as Gunadhar Fadikar, Tarani Charan Bera and Sucharita Pramanik. His fervent involvement resulted in his arrest by the British authorities, leading to a one-month imprisonment term in Tamluk Special Jail, coupled with a fine of Rs. 50. Despite these hardships, upon release, he resumed his activism within the village and continued to contribute to various Congress-led movements.

In the historic Quit India Movement of 1942, Kalipada played a pivotal role in the Pratappur Union board demolition operation under the leadership of Kanailal Jana, alongside Jiban Samanta. Once again, his dedication led to his apprehension and subsequent sentencing to one month in TamlukJail. He furthered his activism by actively participating in the Tebhaga movement of 1946-49. Later in life, along with his wife, he committed himself to public service.

Kalipada Bera passed away in 2009.
