Gondaram Gond

Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh

May 07, 2024 to May 07, 2026

Gondaram was a resident of village Jaitpuri, block Nagari, district Dhamtari. This is a remote forest area, where the youth played a big role in getting the country freedom by participating in the freedom movement with great enthusiasm.

Gondaram, despite lacking formal education, actively participated in the Civil Disobedience movement's second phase in 1932. When the call to boycott foreign goods arose, he joined the youth in staging a sit-in at a foreign goods shop in Sadar Bazar, Raipur, as per the District Congress Committee's decision. Among those involved was Gondaram's father, Dori Gond, who was arrested while picketing in March 1932 and subsequently sentenced to six months in Raipur Central Jail. Gondaram himself was known for his straightforwardness and simplicity. He frequently mingled with fellow villagers and, when the police came to apprehend him, he skillfully evaded capture by disappearing into the forest, thus remaining free from custody for the most part.

Despite his active involvement in the movement, he faced imprisonment only once, in 1932.

The name is mentioned in the inscription of the Martyr Memorial building, Raipur.
