Barrister Chhedilal

Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh

May 07, 2024 to May 07, 2026

Barrister Chhedilal was born in 1886 to a landlord family in Akaltara village of Bilaspur district. After completing his intermediate education at Muir College, Prayag, pursued higher studies at Oxford, obtaining an M.A. in History followed by an L.L.B. degree. Proficient in Hindi, English, Urdu, and Sanskrit, he immersed himself in India House, a revolutionary organization in London, and received bomb-making training in France.

Inspired by Gandhism, Chhedilal played a pivotal role in the non-cooperation movement of 1920, forsaking advocacy for active participation in Satyagraha and social service. His influence extended to academia, where he taught at Banaras University and GurukulKangri, earning accolades for his scholarship.

Transitioning to politics, Chhedilal held prominent positions in the Bhanpur Railway Workers Union and utilized innovative methods like incorporating Rashtriya Ramayana into Ramlila to foster awareness. However, his commitment to the cause led to several arrests during the Civil Disobedience Movement and the Quit India Movement.

Even amid the turbulence of India's struggle for independence, Barrister Chhedilal remained dedicated to nation-building, contributing to the Constitution-making process.

Cheddilal passed away in September 1956.

Name mentioned in the inscription of Martyr Memorial Building Raipur.
