Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoWR)

To celebrate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to mark the 75th anniversary of India's independence, the Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti in collaboration with National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), Barak and Other Basins Organization(BOBO), Central Water Commission, Shillong, State Government Water Resources Department and Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited(MeECL) organized an outreach programme under the aegis of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM)" on the theme " Promoting Dam Tourism" at Umiam Dam.

The following activities were performed:

  • Awareness Programme on Improved Water Resources Management to People of Umiam Dam.
  • "Tree Plantation campaign" near Umiam Dam to sensitize common people regarding the role of trees in water conservation, improving water quality and quantity, reducing soil erosion, water infiltration, groundwater recharge and increasing biodiversity in the area.
  • Drawing and painting competition at Kendriya Vidyalaya, NEPA on 28.08.2023 for school children on the theme of “Water conservation” and “Benefits & importance of dams to the public” followed by a cultural programme by school children and prize distribution was organized.
  • Organization of Lake Festival showcasing and promotion of the local traditions/culture and musical performances through Jan Bhagidari (local artists/ community participation) was organized promoting dam tourism at ‘Water Sports Complex’ at the dam site on 29.08.2023. Showcasing the culture of the state, colourful cultural programmes were presented by the main tribal groups/communities of the state viz Garo, Khasi and Jantia and enthralled the audience with their singing, dancing and folk performances.
    A large cross-section of people representing different demographic age groups attended the event.

Departmental staff, participants including students, volunteers, and dignitaries, actively participated in the event with great enthusiasm. Around 300 participants from the neighbouring locality came to participate in the event.
