Chess competition was organized for senior citizen women during Khelo India. It helps for developing strategic thinking, building the analytical power of a person, chess helps a person frame better strategies not only while playing the game but also in the aspects of life. Chess requires person to use cognitive functions such as decoding, analysis, thinking, and comprehension which are all skills required for reading. Studies have shown that kids who play chess score an average of 10 percentage points higher on reading tests versus kids who don't play chess. The primary goal of organising the event was to provide a platform to female athletes who are unable to compete at the national/state level competitions. Sports have been considered a male-dominated genre, but women have been adamant to get past the set boundaries and break the glass-ceiling.
