Most people associate epithets like valour, security, and responsibility with the police. For the past several years Delhi Police is continuously expanding the scope of public service by engaging in activities beyond its responsibilities for the betterment of society. One such initiative of the Delhi Police is Jeevan Dayini which connects those in need of blood with police officers willing to donate.
Starting in 2016, with only 15-16 volunteers from Delhi Police, the initiative has grown substantially with the participation of more than 250 Delhi Police personnel and 650 donors from Haryana Police, the army, etc. This blood donation initiative is garnering praises from all corners for saving lives and sensitizing the masses about the importance of blood donation.
Ashish Dahiya a 30-year-old commando of Delhi Police has donated blood, platelets, and white blood cells 109 times. In 2003, Dahiya saw a young man badly struggling due to the unavailability of blood. The experience changed something in him and he decided to donate blood from then on well aware of several fallacies and notions against blood donation. Dahiya is now also spreading the word about how blood donation does not negatively impact the condition of a healthy person. He is not the only officer who is donating blood so frequently to save lives as part of this wonderful initiative of the police department. There are several other officers like Ravinder Dhariwal and Amit Phogat who have donated blood 80 times and 87 times respectively.
The outbreak of covid-19 in 2020 brought many challenges and one of them was the shortage of blood and plasma in hospitals as many people were reluctant to go out for blood donation due to the fear of the virus. At that time, Delhi Police stepped in and launched Jeevan Rakshak a digital bank for Covid patients in need of plasma therapy. One could register a request for plasma through a link titled “Donate Plasma-Save Lives” on Delhi Police’s official website. The initiative saved many lives during the early days of the pandemic.
