Rambhaben Madhavjibhai (Sukhpariya)

Rajkot, Gujarat

April 12, 2023 to April 12, 2024

Rambhaben Madhavjibhai (Sukhpariya) Ganatra was born in 1897. She married at a young age and with her husband and family’s support, she continued to participate in her capacity in the freedom struggle. During the protest that took place in Karachi in the 1930s, she was one of the lead volunteers who fought bravely. The protest was curbed harshly by the police. She spent a total of three-quarters of a year behind bars. While she was in jail, she went through a lot of difficult experiences. By going on a hunger strike, she wanted to bring attention to the terrible treatment that the prisoners were receiving. She took part in the protest as a pioneer in the actions of picketing liquor and foreign goods and boycotting domestic goods. Participated in the procession held by women. An arrest was made as a direct and immediate result of this event. The judge decided that a prison sentence of six months was appropriate. She began her new life in Rajkot and went back to the village where she had spent her childhood. She became a part of a volunteer group of women who were operating programs with the intention of assisting mothers and children. The social welfare work that was done in the Rajkot district revealed tendencies that were similar to those seen elsewhere.
