Uttam Singh born in Punjab was living in Phoenix Bay of South Andaman. In June 1942, he joined the Indian Independence League (IIL). He took part in anti-British activities of the League under Ram Singh of Junglighat. He was arrested and imprisoned in the Cellular Jail. After a series of inhuman and barbaric torture he received, on 30 January 1944, he was shot dead by the Japanese and buried in an ‘L’ shaped mass grave with 43 others in a row at Homfraygunj in South Andaman. A memorial ‘Balidan Vedi’ has been erected in memory of them at the spot where they got martyrdom.
