Dronamraju Lakshmi Bayamma

Dronamraju Lakshmi Bayamma (1898-1970) was from Mutyalapalli Village in the Narasapuram Taluka of the West Godavari District. She was born in the year 1898 to Sundara Ramayya and Rama Lakshmamba. She was a writer and a constructive worker. She organized the picketing of foreign cloth shops during the Civil Disobedience Movement. She was sentenced to 6 months in jail and a fine of Rs 10/-, or a further 6 weeks in prison. She was sent to the Vellore and Cannanore jails for confinement. She was a member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council from 1958 to 1966. She did pioneering work for the cause of women and Harijan upliftment. She also worked tirelessly for the advancement of basic education, khadi propagation, and Hindi Prachar. She was a member of the Andhra University Senate. She composed the Bhagavat Gita and Ramayanam in Telugu and wrote the many books, including Krishna Satakam, Veeramati, and Shanti Kamudu. She was District Secretary of Kasturba Trust and Bharat Sevak Samaj; and Vice-President of Gandhi Smarak Nidhi. She was responsible for the establishment of a Kasturi Devi Vidyalayam and an industrial school in Nellore; various Mahila sangams, as well as Gruha Laxmi Press. Editor Kesari Garu honored her with a gold bracelet on behalf of the magazine. She passed away on 27 August 1970.
