Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Prince Angou Sana alias Bhuban Singh was the son of Maharaja Chandrakriti and Queen Haobam Chanu. During the period of Maharaja Surchandra, he was appointed as ‘Dolai Hanjaba’ (Commander of the Royal Palanquins) and further promoted to Senapati during the reign of Maharaja Kulachandra in 1890. Senapati Angousana fought against the British on 24 March 1891. After the defeat of Anglo- in the Manipur War of 1891, he was arrested on 18 May 1891 by the British. He was tried by the Special Court from 17 to 22 June 1891 and found him guilty of Waging War against Queen Empress of India and abetment of the murder of Mr. Quinton, Colonel Skene, Lieutenant Simpson, and Mr. Cossins. He was sentenced to death but his sentence was later commuted to transportation for life and forfeiture of property vide No 1653E, dated 18 August 1891. Resolution & Proclamation published in the Gazette of India dated 22 August 1891.
