Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Kovai Khadar Ayyamuthu

Kovai Khadar Ayyamuthu was born in 1898 to Angannan and Marakkal in the Kangeyam region of Tirupur district. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi since childhood, he participated in the freedom struggle. He married Govindammal in 1921. Ayyamuthu was an important leader in the Sarvodaya Movement. In 1924, Kovai Ayyamthu participated in the Vaikom satyagraha. He also played a pivotal role in the Khadi movement in the Coimbatore region. After independence Ayyamuthu and Govindammal set up the "Gandhi Pannai '' on the Coimbatore Pollachi road. Their house was named "Rajaji Illam". He passed away on 21 December 1975.
