Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Periyaswamy Thooran

Periyasamy Thooran was born to K.A. Palanivelappa Gounder and Paavaathal on 26 September 1987 at Manjakattuvalasu, near Modakurichi, in the Erode district of India. He was greatly influenced and inspired by the firebrand poet and revolutionary Subramania Bharathi and Mahatma Gandhi. From 1904 to 1920, he published Bharathi’s songs, in Sudesamithiran Newspaper. He was Chief Editor 1948 to 1978 of the Tamil Encyclopedia which ran to ten volumes. His songs were published in five volumes entitled Isai Mani Manjari. His other publications include Thooran Stories (1962), Nalla Nalla Paattu (1965), Call of the Wild, and Bharati for children. Thooran was a worthy recipient of many honors and titles. The Padma Bhushan, Isai Perarignar, Kalaimamani, and Annamalai Chettiar Awards were prominent among them.
