Hisar, Haryana

March 31, 2023 to March 31, 2024

The history of Indian freedom struggle is a history of blood and tears. There is a glorious story of the sacrifice of the freedom fighters of district Hisar in building this grand temple of freedom. One such freedom fighter will get information about the life and works of Master Fateh Singh.

Fateh Singh was born on 8 May 1916 in village Ghiray of Tehsil Hansi in a farmer's family. His father Jawaharlal was an ordinary farmer and mother Manbhari Devi was a very simple and compassionate religious woman. He passed middle and later  Prabhakar's examination from Punjab University. After some time of getting education, he got married to Chhoti Devi in village Kharal near Narwana (Jind). They had four sons and one daughter.

Since childhood, along with getting education, he had a passion to do social work.  In the severe flood of Rohtak in 1934 and after that in 1939 he served the people who were affected by famine. He was influenced by the ideas of Lala Hardev Sahay. He was one of the active workers of Vidya Pracharini Sabha and Gram Seva Mandal and Bharat Gau Sevak Sangh. In the guise of a fakir, he roamed the desert roads day and night and kept lighting up the freedom struggle. In 1942, during the Quit India Movement, he was teaching in Vidya Pracharini Sabha's school, Sandwa in Bhiwani.

Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had an impact on him, due to which he resigned from the post of teacher and jumped into this great movement of freedom struggle. He propagated the freedom movement while living underground for many months. Fateh Singh along with friends had secretly plotted to remove rail fishplates between Bhiwani and Manendu. But a day before the police came to know and they were arrested. The court sentenced him to 6 months. Fateh Singh was detained for  3 weeks in Hisar and the rest in old Central Jail Multan. Many patriots of Hisar were prisoners along with them. Among these, the names of Lala Hardev Sahay, Dada Ganeshi Lal, Balwant Rai Tayal and Chaudhary Devi Lal are notable.

After being released from jail, he got busy in teaching again. In those days there was a great shortage of water in Sandwa village of Bhiwani. He got a very big pond constructed with public cooperation, which costed about ₹ 200,000. This work was completed in 5 years. In the year 1957, after resigning from the post of teacher, he got engaged in creative public service work.

He was an embodiment of simplicity, kindness and sacrifice. He was a true Gandhian, so till today he wears clothes made of thick cotton. He did khadi work in Charkha Sangh for a long time and also inspected some schools.

Like a true Karma Yogi, he continued to do social service even in his old age. At the age of 80, he died on 3 May 1996, on the full moon day.
