Shrirang Bhau Shinde was born in 1898 in the village of Unchithane, Maharashtra. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and KrantiSinh Nana Patil, he actively participated in village activities such as promoting khadi and attending morning rounds, alongside his association with Parshuram Gharge, the Congress district President.
In 1942, amidst the fervor of the national movement, secret meetings were held across Satara District, culminating in a historic march to Vaduj Kacheri on September 9th. Shrirang, along with 1500 others, joined the march from Vadgaon, wearing a turban and carrying Bhakaris, exuding enthusiasm and patriotism.
As the procession reached Vaduj, tensions escalated. Despite the peaceful intentions, the British officers unleashed a barrage of bullets, targeting the marchers. Shrirang valiantly led his contingent to safety, but tragically fell victim to the indiscriminate firing, succumbing to his injuries. Alongside him, several others were martyred, and many were permanently displaced.
Shrirang Shinde, along with other brave souls like Parashuram Gharge, Kisan Bala Bhosale, and Sidu Pawar, sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of freedom. Their valor is commemorated by a martyrs' memorial in Vaduj, serving as a testament to their unwavering courage and dedication to the cause of independence.
