Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways organized an event ‘Sagarmala: Safalta Ke Saat Saal’ on 25 March 2022 to commemorate the seven successful years of the Sagarmala Program. The exemplary performance of the flagship program of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways was highlighted during this mega event.
The book contains press coverages and photos of the gala event ‘Sagarmala: Safalta Ke Saat Saal’. This book is an initiative to acknowledge those who made tireless efforts to make Sagarmala a successful program.
The mobile application of Sagarmala was launched by Union Minister, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) Shri Sarbananda Sonowal in the present Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Shripad Naik; Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Shantanu Thakur; Secretary, (MoPSW) Dr. Sanjeev Ranjan, Joint Secretary (MoPSW) Bhushan Kumar, and other senior officials and dignitaries. The app is developed by IIT Chennai and the app enables real-time monitoring of projects and data visualization which will improve efficiency and help in faster decision making.
On this occasion, a report card featuring the success stories of the Sagarmala program was also shared. The Sagarmala program has 802 projects worth Rs. 5.48 lakh Crore which is targeted to be executed by 2035 out of which 194 projects worth Rs. 99,000 Crore have been completed. A total of 29 projects worth Rs. 45,000 Crore have been successfully implemented under the PPP model, thus, reducing the financial burden on the exchequer. Further, there are 218 projects worth Rs. 2.12 lakh Crore under construction and expected to be completed in 2 years. This apart, 390 projects worth Rs. 2.37 Lakh Crore are under development pipeline.
During the event, various MoUs were signed. Firstly, an MoU was signed between the Inland Waterways Authority of India and the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur for the development of the Sagarmala Coastal and Inland Waterways Cargo Facilitation Center. Secondly, a contract was awarded to M/s Sapl JV on EPC mode for the development of Kulai Fishing Harbour which will ease the burden on the crowded harbor, in addition, to augment the supply of fish to both domestic and foreign markets. Thirdly, an MoU has been signed between Paradip Port and IPRCL for the Upgradation and Modernization of Paradip Fishing Harbour for Rs. 99.75 crores. Also, a contract with TATA Projects was signed for the development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) an ambitious project of the Sagarmala Program at Lothal. On the auspicious occasion, a letter was awarded to Mumbai International Cruise Terminal, which will transform the city into a cruise destination thereby boosting tourism.
Sagarmala program was launched in March 2015 with the objectives to achieve port modernization & new port development, port connectivity enhancement, port-led industrialization, and coastal community development. The program has followed a stepped approach to implementation with the first attempt on implementing the maritime projects through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) wherever feasible. Projects which have a high social and economic quotient, but low IRR are being implemented through funding support under the Sagarmala program.
